Terra is, essentially, dead and waiting to crumble. The atmosphere is choked thick with dust and toxins- so thick that the sun can no longer be seen on the planet's surface, except in rare glimpses. Beyond this toxic haze, the surface is now almost exclusively seared rock, urban wastelands, and fields of glass that were once deserts. The oceans have dried almost completely from existence, and the water that remains is black with lethal chemicals and debris.
The few vestiges of humanity still trapped on the dying planet are cloistered within insulated domes, some the size of small cities, to avoid the fatal radiation that still rebounds within Terra's all-but sealed atmosphere- and even these domes cannot withstand the radiation bombardment forever. In order to sustain their carefully-preserved habitats, the remaining humans launch raids into the surrounding cityscapes, harvesting metal and concrete to plaster on the inside of their domes like stucco. Many raiding parties have not returned- and still more that have, have suffered radiation poisoning and an agonizing death as the result.
